The True Culprit: What Causes Jewellery Allergies?

However, nickel is the source of the problem over 90% of the time. Therefore, the single most important rule for buying hypoallergenic jewellery is to choose pieces that are nickel-free.

Costume Jewellery

This is the most common source of irritation. Pieces made from unspecified "base metals" or alloys like brass (copper and zinc), bronze (copper and tin), or "nickel silver" (which, confusingly, contains no silver, only nickel, copper, and zinc) are highly likely to contain significant amounts of nickel.

Gold-Plated and Gold-Vermeil Jewellery

These pieces can be a temporary solution but are not a "forever" answer. Both gold-plated and gold-vermeil items involve a thin layer of gold over a base metal. In the case of vermeil, that base is sterling silver. In the case of plating, it is often a brass or copper alloy.

The problem is that this top layer is not permanent. With friction and time, the gold plating will wear away, exposing your skin to the base metal underneath. If that base is sterling silver, you risk a copper reaction. If it is brass, you risk a reaction to both copper and any nickel that may be present.

Sterling Silver (925)

This often surprises people. Sterling silver is a very popular and high-quality material, but it is not inherently hypoallergenic for everyone. The "925" stamp signifies that the piece is 92.5% pure silver. The remaining 7.5% is an alloy, almost always copper, added for strength.

While most people are fine with sterling silver, those with a very high sensitivity (or a specific copper allergy) may still experience irritation.

The Gold Standard: The Safest Hypoallergenic Metals for Necklaces

For those with sensitive skin, the solution is to invest in fine, "biocompatible" metals that are pure, inert, and contain no nickel. These are the luxury standards for a reason.

1. Platinum: The Ultimate Choice

If you are looking for the single best, safest, and most luxurious metal for sensitive skin, platinum is the undisputed champion.

Why it is Safe: Platinum used in fine jewellery (stamped Pt950) is 95% pure platinum, with the remaining 5% being other non-irritating metals from the same family (like palladium or iridium). It is naturally hypoallergenic and inert, meaning it does not react with your skin or tarnish.

The Luxury Benefit: Platinum is a naturally white metal, so it never needs plating and its colour will never fade or change. It is also stronger and denser than gold, making it the most durable precious metal on earth. For a "wear-it-and-forget-it" piece, platinum necklaces are the pinnacle of both safety and luxury.

2. High-Carat Gold (18ct or Higher)

Gold itself is entirely inert. The allergy risk only comes from the metals it is mixed with. The "carat" (ct) system tells you how pure the gold is, in 24 parts.

24ct Gold: This is 99.9% pure gold and is completely hypoallergenic. However, it is far too soft for practical, everyday jewellery like necklaces, which would scratch and bend easily.

18ct Gold (750): This is the luxury standard for gold jewellery and the safest choice for sensitive skin. Stamped "750," it is 75% pure gold, with only 25% other alloys.

18ct Yellow Gold: This is an excellent, safe choice. The 25% alloy is typically a mix of silver and copper, which are very unlikely to cause a reaction.

18ct Rose Gold: Also a very safe choice. The alloy is a higher percentage of copper, which gives it its pink hue. Unless you have a specific and rare copper allergy, this is considered hypoallergenic.

A Special Note: 18ct White Gold

White gold necklaces require special attention. To make gold "white," it must be alloyed with white metals. Traditionally, this metal was nickel, which makes most vintage or lower-quality white gold a major risk.

However, modern, high-end fine jewellers (including us) have moved away from this. We create our 18ct white gold using a superior, nickel-free alloy.

18ct Palladium White Gold: This is the luxury, hypoallergenic alloy. Palladium is a precious metal from the platinum family it is hypoallergenic, rare, and valuable in its own right.

Rhodium Plating: All white gold is plated with rhodium (another platinum-family metal) to give it a final, bright white, dazzling finish. This plating provides an additional hypoallergenic barrier between your skin and the metal, though the primary safety comes from the nickel-free alloy beneath.

3. Titanium

A modern, non-traditional, and incredibly safe option is medical-grade titanium. This metal is used for surgical implants precisely because it is "biocompatible" the human body does not reject it. It is 100% inert and contains no nickel.

While titanium is more commonly found in modern wedding bands or earrings, it is a fantastic, lightweight, and extremely strong option for pendants and chains if you favour a contemporary, non-traditional look.

What to Avoid: The Risky Metals

Based on this, the metals to avoid if you have sensitive skin are clear:

Nickel or Nickel-Alloys: (e.g., "nickel silver").

Low-Carat Gold (9ct or 14ct): A 9ct gold necklace is only 37.5% pure gold. The remaining 62.5% is a mix of other metals, which greatly increases the likelihood of nickel being present in the alloy.

Unstamped or "Base Metal" Jewellery: If there is no hallmark (like Pt950, 750, or 925), you cannot know what is in it. Avoid it.

Look for the Hallmark: This is your first sign of quality. Look for the stamp: Pt950 for platinum or 750 for 18ct gold.

Ask the Jeweller Directly: Do not be shy. Ask the question: "Is this piece 100% nickel-free?" A reputable, high-end jeweller will be able to answer this with a definitive "yes."

Prioritise Purity: When in doubt, choose the metal with the highest purity. Platinum (95%) and 18ct gold (75%) are your safest and most beautiful options.
